《天穗種稻姬》是一款橫向動作冒險 RPG，玩家扮演武神與豐穰神結合所生的 Sakuna 公主（サクナ，原意為沖繩的長命草），和人民顛沛流離來到「日之惠島」（ヒノエ島），在這個絕世獨立的環境中展開拓荒與驅鬼，並教導人民耕作。

本作遊戲玩法為地圖關卡探索，玩家可操作可愛的 Sakuna 公主在島上冒險驅鬼，所得的材料可用來製作裝備或武器，甚至也能應用在生活系統上。

遊戲中另一個玩法就是種田模擬，玩家從耕土、插秧、收成、輾米等過程來獲得農作物，並進一步製成道具，從宣傳介紹來看，Sakuna 公主吃了白米飯似乎會變得更有力量。
